Fears Over Fluoride

When government scientists reported last spring that rates of childhood tooth decay had risen slightly over the past two decades, some dental professionals proposed a possible explanation: Those children might not be getting enough fluoride, a chemical that binds to tooth enamel and makes it resistant to decay. While the theory remains to be proved, the finding underscores the need for kids to get some fluoride—but not too much.--U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Wells in southeast North Dakota contain high levels of arsenic

FARGO, ND — One of the state’s US senators is urging the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to put arsenic-contaminated drinking water in rural North Dakota at the top of its Superfund cleanup list, according to a February 13 article in The Forum news service.

More than 300 residents in southeastern North Dakota rely on private well water that contains levels of arsenic that exceed the EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb). Some of the wells contain levels between 50 ppb and 100 ppb, the article said.

Arsenic was once used to kill clouds of grasshoppers that ate crops, and the chemical is now found in groundwater across three counties in the southeast corner of the state, the article said.

Cholera outbreak in Laos

VIENTIANE, LAOS — UNICEF, the international aid agency, announced in a January 30 press release that it is responding to the first outbreak of cholera in this southeast Asian country’s southern region in nearly eight years.

Securing safe water and adequate sanitation is essential in tackling cholera, a water-borne disease. As such, immediate support has included chlorinating water sources and toilets, repairing damaged bore holes and educating villagers on hygiene, the release said.
