Most of these deaths are attributable to poor drinking water supplies or poor sanitation.

Analyzing information from water quality programs in 28 nations, Clasen and Haller concluded that household-based chlorination, with a cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) of US$53, was the most cost-effective among the four technologies studied for improving water quality at the household level.

Other DALY cost-effectiveness ratings for household-level disinfection technologies calculated in the study were: solar disinfection, US$61; ceramic filtration, US$142; and household flocculation/disinfection, US$472.

READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE WHO study rates anti-diarrhea water treatment

FIND A BACTERIA AND TURBIDITY REDUCING WATER FILTER Ultracarb.Com

Earthquake may have caused Tennessee turbidity spike

ELIZABETHTON, TN — Some here are speculating that the April 18 Midwest earthquake may have caused a dramatic spike last week in turbidity of water drawn from wells supplying the Siam (TN) Utility District, according to an article in the April 29 Elizabethton Star.

Elizabethton is a few miles from Johnson City in far northeast Tennessee. Filtering systems in the home provide the highest technology available for treatment of drinking water. Less than two percent of all water consumed is ingested by humans, making these “point-of-use” systems the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

While specific product performance standards have not yet been developed for pharmaceuticals, many point-of-use technologies have proven effective for some of these emerging contaminants. Nano-filtration and reverse osmosis systems removed drugs tested by the Colorado School of Mines at full-scale facilities in Arizona and California. Activated carbon, distillation, ozonation, and advanced oxidization have likewise shown promise in removing many of these contaminants.
