Ceramic Water filters used for household disinfection in developing countries

GENEVA — A study of four household-based technologies for water disinfection has found that household chlorination is the most cost-effective of the four for preventing diarrhea outbreaks in those parts of the developing world where piped-in public water is not feasible, a new World Health Organization (WHO) study has found.

In their recently released study, Dr. Thomas Clasen of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Laurence Haller of WHO note that diarrhea kills an estimated 1.8 million people annually worldwide, and accounts for 17 percent of deaths of children under age 5 in developing nations. Most of these deaths are attributable to poor drinking water supplies or poor sanitation.

Analyzing information from water quality programs in 28 nations, Clasen and Haller concluded that household-based chlorination, with a cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) of US$53, was the most cost-effective among the four technologies studied for improving water quality at the household level.

Other DALY cost-effectiveness ratings for household-level disinfection technologies calculated in the study were: solar disinfection, US$61; ceramic filtration, US$142; and household flocculation/disinfection, US$472.

More on Pharmaceuticals in U.S. drinking water from the Water Quality Association

Home filtering systems provide best protection for drinking water

As news reports about pharmaceuticals in water circulate, here are several facts for consumers to consider:

Filtering systems in the home provide the highest technology available for treatment of drinking water. Less than two percent of all water consumed is ingested by humans, making these “point-of-use” systems the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

While specific product performance standards have not yet been developed for pharmaceuticals, many point-of-use technologies have proven effective for some of these emerging contaminants. Nano-filtration and reverse osmosis systems removed drugs tested by the Colorado School of Mines at full-scale facilities in Arizona and California. Activated carbon, distillation, ozonation, and advanced oxidization have likewise shown promise in removing many of these contaminants. Individual manufacturers can also test products for specific pharmaceuticals if they choose.

Heightened MTBE threat for New York communities

RONKONKOMA, NY — A recently released study shows that aquifers which supply the drinking water for this Long Island community face a greater threat then previously thought from the fuel additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), according to a February 23 Newsday article.

The New York state Department of Environmental Conservation released a study on February 22 that showed MTBE plumes from previously undetected petroleum spills migrating toward aquifers that supply public drinking water.

Fears Over Fluoride

When government scientists reported last spring that rates of childhood tooth decay had risen slightly over the past two decades, some dental professionals proposed a possible explanation: Those children might not be getting enough fluoride, a chemical that binds to tooth enamel and makes it resistant to decay. While the theory remains to be proved, the finding underscores the need for kids to get some fluoride—but not too much.--U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Wells in southeast North Dakota contain high levels of arsenic

FARGO, ND — One of the state’s US senators is urging the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to put arsenic-contaminated drinking water in rural North Dakota at the top of its Superfund cleanup list, according to a February 13 article in The Forum news service.

More than 300 residents in southeastern North Dakota rely on private well water that contains levels of arsenic that exceed the EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb). Some of the wells contain levels between 50 ppb and 100 ppb, the article said.

Arsenic was once used to kill clouds of grasshoppers that ate crops, and the chemical is now found in groundwater across three counties in the southeast corner of the state, the article said.

Yuma Arizona Proving Ground wants to rid water of arsenic

YUMA, AZ — High arsenic levels in drinking water from wells at the US Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) mean that employees rely on bottled water and homes on the base are equipped with point-of-use reverse osmosis units, according to a January 16 Yuma Sun article.

While arsenic is a familiar problem here — it’s found naturally in the bedrock and soil of Yuma County — the YPG wants a complete water treatment system to resolve the arsenic issue and will ask the Army for one.
