Orange County California residents saying ‘no thanks’ to fluoride

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Some county residents here are taking measures to reduce their exposure to the fluoride that was recently added to the water supply, a recent Orange County Register story reported.

County resident Blythe Fair said in the story, “I feel bad that there isn't a choice – there isn’t a way around being poisoned.” Among other things, Fair said she has been practicing Jin Shin Jyutsu to strengthen her bones and has changed the way she showers to limit exposure.

Most global illness linked to poor water — CNN

ATLANTA — Unsanitary water conditions are to blame for 88 percent of all diseases, and agriculture is endangering groundwater worldwide, CNN reported on December 18.

The CNN report, a review of the world water-health situation, relays information from various global sources, such as the World Bank, which reported that water-related problems are responsible for 88 percent of all diseases. Other sources quoted in the CNN report include UNICEF, the US Geological Survey, UNESCO, the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Global Environment Outlook-4, the Natural Resources Defense Council and others.

Portland Oregon to seek Cryptosporidium variance

PORTLAND, OR — Officials here are preparing a report that justifies a petition they’ll make to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeking a variance to federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulations relating to Cryptosporidium treatment, according to a December 10 article in The Oregonian.

City officials say their water is healthy and does not need to be treated for the parasite. SDWA regulations state that public water systems must either cover all reservoirs or treat the water once it leaves uncovered reservoirs.

Lead is growing problem, drinking water expert

BLACKSBURG, VA — Lead in drinking water is a growing problem across the United States, says Marc Edwards, an expert in drinking water safety who recently was interviewed by Earth & Sky Radio.

Edwards, a civil engineering professor at Virginia Tech and a MacArthur Fellow for 2007, said Americans most likely take safe drinking water for granted, but that they should not, noting that aging water-delivery infrastructure contributes to lead levels in tap water.

Minnesota city water sickened families’ pets

Pennsylvania family finds manure-tainted water from faucets

FULTON COUNTY, PA — One family in this rural south-central Pennsylvania county is frustrated not only by the brown-tinged, manure-smelling water flowing from their faucets, but also by the slow response their calls to the state have received.

The Clevengers first noticed the brown, manure-smelling water in the early-morning hours of October 5. Their son, Bill Clevenger, told the Public Opinion that within an hour of the time his parents first noticed the problem, he placed a call to the county soil conservation district, which fields local manure spill and soil erosion reports for the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Arsenic water leads to $400M lawsuit against California county

MERCED COUNTY, CA — Merced County employees who worked or work at the John Latorraca Correctional Facility are suing the county for $400 million as a result of arsenic being found in the facility's drinking water, an October 12 Modesto Bee story reported.

Attorney Barry Bennett said the county failed to act after knowing the drinking water at its jail and juvenile hall was contaminated. Bennett said employees may have consumed food made with the contaminated water.

According to Bennett, county employees have gotten sick with symptoms attributed to arsenic consumption.

Alaska city voters say 'no' to fluoride

JUNEAU, AK — A 61 percent majority of residents here voted “no” earlier this week to fluoridating the city’s water supplies, an October 3 Juneau Empire story said.

David Ottoson, a member of the anti-fluoridation group Juneau Citizens for Safe Water, said in the story, “There’s a lot of smart people in Juneau, and they understood the issue very well, and it was reflected in the result at the polls.”

Ottoson said that there are better ways to for people to get fluoride.

E. coli closes 10 schools in Washington State

OLYMPIA, WA — About 8,000 Bethel School District students were told their schools were closed on October 4 after the Spanaway Water Co. detected E. coli in two routine water samples and total coliform in a third, according to an October 4 King5 report.

ID city wants to blend water to reduce arsenic

TWIN FALLS, ID — This city’s drinking water has tested positive for arsenic, with levels as high as 18.1 parts per billion (ppb) in some samples, above the US Environmental Protection Agency’s allowable level of 10 ppb, a June 6 Times-News story said.


A water quality report revealed the amounts last week, although the samples were taken in 2006.


The city said it is working with the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to reduce the amount of arsenic. The DEQ has given the city until January of 2011 to bring arsenic levels down to 10 ppb. The city wants to blend arsenic-containing water with water from Blue Lakes Springs.
